I cannot download the newest version of iTunes, and also cannot access songs that I have had in my library for a long time. What do you suggest?

Sorry; I thought I would get support here. Guess I was wrong....
Can I get some help? It appears I do have the ability to download the latest version of iTunes. But when I go to open what I have downloaded, my Finder says that it "is not supported on this system". I don't want to have to buy a new computer... Is there any way you can help me to download songs from iTunes? I have a iTunes giftcard, but my older iTunes app will NOT let me redeem anything. This is a Mac OS X system (though old) it should be able to at least grant me some value from the code on the giftcard, let alone allow me to buy a song. Have I just been conned?
