I need help adding english subtitles to DVD's. My mother is deaf and needs them but I can't figure out how to take an already purchased DVD movie and add subtitles? Has anyone done this?

You can't add subtitles to a purchased, commercial DVD. It would require modifying the entire disc, and this is physically impossible.
It's odd that a commercially-produced DVD doesn't have subtitles. However, if you're certain there aren't any, you may want to try to exchange it for a version that does have them. There are usually several versions of any given commercial DVD as they get re-issued over the years.
If you still can't find what you're looking for, then your only other option would be to rip the disc to a computer, modify the movie somehow to include subtitles and then burn it to a new disc. However, owing to the copyright infringement this would technically entail, such a solution cannot be discussed here on the Apple Forums.

Thanks, this helped. I found instructions on ripping the discs and then downloading subtitles from a website such as "Mysubtitles" but when I tried it on an old Cary Grant DVD I couldn't even figure out how to rip the disc so it's probably best that it didn't work I guess. Happy New Year to you as well!
My son is hard of hearing, so we are always looking to turn on the subtitles. I have yet to purchase a popular commercial movie on DVD that does NOT have at least English subtitles, and often several other languages as well.
Are you quite certain that the movie you are considering does not already have those subtitles, waiting to be enabled with the controls in the setup screens for the movie?
Old Cary Grant movies? Well maybe not those, but recent stuff all seems to come with subtitles on the disc -- you just have to turn them on.
