I have sinced my iPad but it does not appear in iTunes as a device whatever I try. Are there any tricks?

I am assuming you have the sidebar enabled ( Show > Sidebar) and your device still does not show up there?

Yes the side bar is active. To be more specific, I can see my iPad when it is connected with a cable, but I cannot see it when it is connected by WiFi.
I had this a while ago and it may work for you. Hook up the iPad with the cable and in the Summary page under options see what is checked
For wiFi to work you need the sync with this iPad over WiFi selected.
I am assuming you have already done this. I deselected the Wifi, Sync'd and the reapplied it and syn'd. The disconnected the USB cable and the iPad remained connected
