Print error: the file cannot be previewed because it is protected by a password

Whenever I try to print on my mac I can see it in preview, but, when I click print it does not print; instead I get a printer error saying the file could not be printed because it is password protected. Any ideas?

This happens with any file, and the file itself is not protected. I can seen the file and am not asked for a password.

thanks

Did you try creating a new user and then trying to print? It could be a permissions problem, but it is possible to prevent the printing of a document without preventing the viewing. Does this happen if you create a pdf file from TextEdit and then try to print?

Try running Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Repeat until it shows no repairs were made. Clearing the log in between runs can make the process less confusing.

If that doesn't work try the following which will repair your user permissions:

Permission rebuild user account: You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and opening Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type: reset password and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.
