can not talk to friends on imessage says they are not registered

when trying to text other friends(with ipod touch) it will not let me send, it sez they are not registed, even though I know they are. I'm using there ipod phone number, and also trying there e-mail address. Neither one works. My friends can text eachother using imessage, but it just does not work for me.
