How do i get my ipod to update?

My ipod will not update and is stuck on ios 4.2.1 and i need it to update as there are many apps i am unable to download because of this. I have tried to get it to check for updates but it tells me i have the latest version. I have the second generation ipod and i have tried restoring it to factory settings but i have now lost all my apps and still no update, how do i get it to update?

iPod touch, iOS 4.2

Error. A 2nd generation iPod touch can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1, so you can't use the deleted apps with a newer version that doesn't support iOS 4.2.1. If you have got the apps on your computer, connect the device and sync it on iTunes to get the apps. If not, you can't recover them and you will have to buy a new iPod
