On a newish iMac , CDs inserted into the slot do not appear on screen, so I went the thumb drive route, and that didn't appear on screen either....yet when I removed it the "improperly removed" warning appeared. Are there settings that need to be adjusted before external devices will be recognized?

CDs and external disks only appear on the Finder sidebar by default. If you want to show them on the Desktop, go to Finder > Preferences > General, and tick "External disks" and "CDs, DVDs and iPods" options

Can't imagine why not showing items on the desktop would be the default.

Apple's longtime philosophy is to simplify the user experience. Often, to the point of over simplification.
You're welcome. And I agree with you. This is the first preferences I change when installing OS X or setting up a new user.
