OS X versions in using migration assistant

Can my destination Mac HDD have higher OS X version than the source (in my case it is an external SATA drive)?

Or do both the source and destination drive have to have same OS X?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Migration Assistant will migrate data from an older version of OS X to a newer version of OS X.
