Mountain Lion restarts spontaneously, FCP-X disappears...

Lately my Mac Pro has been restarting (rebooting) spontaneously. It can happen any time, whether or not it is being used. A related symptom (possibly) is that FCP-X disappears spontaneously from the screen - just POOF! - gone... The reboot happens whether or not I'm using FCP-X. It got much worse when I got Motion which I uninstalled.

The CalDigit card, or its driver, is causing the panics, perhaps with assistance from CUDA, Logitech Control Center, and/or the OpenVPN software. I suggest you back up all data and then remove the last three items according to the developer's instructions, reboot, and test. If you still get the panics, you've isolated them to the card.

Linc,

Thanks for your response!

I couldn't find any OpenVPN software on my Mac.

I did remove the Logitech Control Center. The spontaneous reboots haven't happened for at least three days, so maybe that was it.

CUDA is still installed, I think - I didn't remove it.

This left me without a mouse function I use a lot: the left scroll wheel click for "back" when browsing.

I looked for updated drivers for the USB3 card and it seems I have their latest. I couldn't find another USB3 card to substitute for this one; there's no guarantee their driver wouldn't eat something else anyway...

I'm still left with my FCP-X crash problem which is in another thread I posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4664242?answerId=20782636022#20782636022&ac_cid=op123456#20782636

The card or its driver is causing the panics. Whether the other items are contributing, I can't say, because you haven't removed them all. The TAP kernel extension may be left over from something you installed and failed to remove cleanly.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.

You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

Mountain Lion restarts spontaneously, FCP-X disappears...
