Streaming video has lost audio

My iMac Core Duo was working fine yesterday. Today, when I play a video on youtube.com or other sites, there is video, but no sound. The sound is fine on the DVD player and iTunes videos are fine too. It seems to affect only streaming videos from a browser.

I have repaired permissions, logged into a test account, checked all the settings I can think of, and tried it with Firefox and IE. Same thing with any of them. Calling Applecare was worse than useless.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Somehow the Audio MIDI setup settings got changed (notthing I did on purpose). Changing them back fixed it.

Some folks have found that the midi settings get changed by some apps, and the apps don't switch them back! But you found the fix.

I find it disappointing that the AppleCare agent didn't know about this article. She told me "Sometimes things just stop working."

Now how's that for a helpful answer?
