Printer won't work - CUPS failed

I am trying to get my new Canon MF4890DW printer to work with Mac OS X v10.7.5 Lion to no avail. When trying to print any document (web page, or a simple TextEditor file), the printer queue pops up and it errors out with "/Library/Printers/Canon/CUPS_MF_Printer/Bins/capdftopdl failed." I have pasted the detailed logs below.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The log shows that the printer queue was created using the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol. Not sure why the Bonjour selection would have used this protocol as the UFR2 driver does not support this protocol. So remove the printer and add it again, this time using the IP > LPD protocol. You will need to know the IP address of the MF which you enter in the host name field.

Thanks for the suggestion, PAHU. I tried it to no avail. It still returns the same error.

I have noticed the printer driver seems to reply with an "unsupported size" error in both this and the previous logs after trying to connect to the printer. Does this have any significance?

I tried connecting the printer using USB and interestingly this time the error log showed "Sent 0 bytes" along with the "unsupported size" error message. Does it mean that some app/utility is unable to determine the document size?

Both logs show that you are sending a Letter size document to the printer. This usually does not result in an error like you are getting. You usually just get a message at the printing prompting you to load Letter (LTR) paper. So I don't believe this is the cause, but you could certainly ensure you have A4 selected in the print dialog if you have A4 paper loaded in the MF.

What the two recent logs also show is that the print queues have not been created correctly. This is often caused by the UFR2 Backgrounder process not running when the print queues are added. To check this, open Activity Monitor and look for the UFR2 Backgrounder process. If you don't see it listed, open Finder and navigate to HD > Library > Printers > Canon > UFR2 > Utilities and double-click the UFR II Backgrounder icon. Nothing will appear on the screen when you do this but if you check Activity Monitor you should now see the UFR2 Backgrounder process. If so, remove the current print queue/s to the MF and add again. I expect this will now print for you without the error.

PAHU, sorry for the late reply. I was travelling and just returned back to the home office.

I downloaded the latest drivers from the canon site, but it does not use a UFRII Backgrounder process for printing. Under Utilties I only have "autoSetupTool." If I look at Activity monitor, I see "Canon MF Scan Agent" and "Canon MFScanner", but nothing in regards to any print driver/queue. Does it have anything to do with my system being 64bit?

The UFRII Backgrounder is a process, not an application. It does not reside in Applications or Utilities. That's why you need to use Activity Monitor to see if it is running.

Then this is the problem. For the printer to be created correctly, the UFRII Backgrounder process must be running when you add the printer. This process should start automatically when you log in but you can also start it manually. To do so, open Finder and in the menubar, select Go > Go to Folder. Then type in

/Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2/Utilities

and press Go. This Utilities folder should show you two files; Canon UFRII Printer Utility and UFRII Backgrounder. Double-click the Backgrounder file. Nothing will appear on the screen but the process should appear in Activity Monitor. If it does appear, then you can add the printer in Print & Scan. Note that you should remove any previous printer to the Canon if it exists in Print & Scan.

With the printer added, see if this will now let you print.

Had a chance to test this new CUPS MF driver this evening. Found out that I was wrong about a couple of things. For starters, it is a different driver to the UFR2 used by other MF devices, so my statement about you needing a UFR2 Backgrounder process was wrong. This driver has its own CUPSCMFP Backgrounder process.

The other thing I was wrong about was the protocol used by this driver. If you add the printer using Bonjour, this will create the queue based on the HP Jetdirect protocol (aka Port 9100). So your printer queue is correct.

The next thing to note is the two items you have highlighted are fine and not the cause of the error. I enabled debug mode in CUPS and printed a job. After filtering all the data for that single print job I saw both of these two lines in the log for the successful print job.

So I have no idea why the capdftopdl is failing on your Mac. I need to do more testing with this driver and see if I can recreate this error. In the meantime, can you confirm a couple of things. Open System Information and in the left column, click on Hardware. This will give a brief overview of your Mac. Can you copy and paste that information back here (you can leave the serial number out). Still in System Information, select Printers in the left column. The top right pane will show all the printers you have. Select the MF48xx and then copy all its information and paste back here. (Note that if you only have the MF48xx on this Mac then there will be no top right pane, just the information about the MF48xx in the right).
