USB SuperDrive & the new 27" iMac?
Will a portable Apple Superdrive work with a new 27" iMac?

The Apple USB SuperDrive works with all Macs without SuperDrive (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac mini and Late 2012 iMac), so you can use it without any problem

Thanks. I must have a defective Superdrive.
You are welcome
I just replaced a IMAC that had an internal Superdrive. I got a New IMAC and just bought an exteral superdrive and it will not work.
What does not work? Does it not burn or play DVDs or ?
I've always preferred tray loading drives - much more reliable (although less "cool" looking, but they work).
Its not taking any CD's. It seems my IMAC does not even know this thing is attached via USB
It will not show on the desktop; once you insert a CD or DVD, the icon for that should be showing on the desktop or in iTunes, iPhoto (or whichever app you have chosen to open media with - FWIW, I prefer not to open any app automatically, so mine does show on the desktop).
Exactly what do you mean by "not taking" CDs? The device is on, plugged in, and you try to insert a CD and it won't automatically slide in all the way? That might be a defective mechanism - if that is the case, take it back to Apple.
Same happening with the newest iMac 27" and the newest MacBook Pro,, Apple USB Super Drive is not even recognised, but it should be ok, because when a CD is inserted, it works a short while, retries and the it ejects the CD...
any wise solution?
best wishes for all

Not trying to be funny but make sure the drive is right-side-up. Aluminum up, Black side down. It happens.
Also, it will eject a CD if it can't read it because of CD damage.
