why can I not open face time on my macbook pro, OK on iMac, ipad and phone?

First of all, have you got FaceTime installed? If not, open App Store and purchase FaceTime, or upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion
yes, paid for, cannot even get preferences up, or use different id, as we already have it
First, try reinstalling the application. Open Finder, go to Applications folder and delete FaceTime. Then, open App Store > Purchases and install FaceTime again. Also, I recommend you to update to 10.6.8, so go to > Software Update and install Mac OS X 10.6.8
