Why are imessages sent to an iphone also received by my ipad

We got a new ipad mini for Christmas. Now when people try to send a message to our iphone we also get the message on the ipad mini. How do we stop this?

Probably because they have the same email address. Give one of them a different address - .gmail - just for iMessage.
