control-keypad won't switch spaces past 6

I have activated keyboard shortcuts up to nine spaces and they switch around fine so long as I'm using the keyboard numbers (i.e., along the top above the letters). If I use the keypad, however, only spaces 1–6 will switch out. 7, 8, and 9 only result in a warning beep.

I've looked to see whether there is some other keyboard shortcut assigned and can't find anything, so I really don't know why it's (not) happening. It's not a big deal, but I find it way more convenient to use the keypad than the keyboard numbers.

Any thoughts?

I'm having this problem on a new rMBP connected to an Apple extended keyboard.  OTOH, control-keypad works just fine on a 2011 iMac connected to an old Apple Pro Keyboard.  Both are up to date with OS X 10.8.2.  I agree that it would be much easier to control-keypad.
