If I update from OS X v10.4 to 10.5, will I lose all my files and family accounts?

My iMac came with v10.4 but also had a disk for 10.5 but I never installed it, didn't realize it was part of the package. Now a few years later I need to install the newest itunes for my daughter's iPod touch, but I cannot because I need OS X v10.6 or higher. My concern is that if I update to 10.5, will I Iose all the pictures and files I have created on my account as well as all the files on my kids accounts? Do I need to back them up before upgrading?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

The answer to your question is No. If your Tiger system is running perfectly, just run the Leopard installer and it will overwrite Tiger and install Leopard. Then run System Update to get the latest version. However having a full backup is always a good idea.

BUT:

If you aim is to obtain the latest version of iTunes you don't need Leopard (which can't run it either) but Snow Leopard, which only runs on Intel Macs.

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:

Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:

and in the UK:

but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
