I agree free the tether.

You can agree all you want. It ain't happening. In the U.S., the official carriers have stopped charging separately for the Personal Hotspot feature. It's included with the rest of the data package.

Read Meg's last reply, the US carriers are not charging for tethering at the present.  There is no tethering app, as Lawrence noted, because tehtering is a feature of the iOS itself that you activate via Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot when you have cellular service established with a carrier.  There is nothing Apple, nor anyone else, can do to provide the tethering service, only a carrier can do that.

I'm sure there are absolutely no issues with the Samsung Galaxy line, unlike iPhones which are full of defects. And carriers that require specific data plans for tethering on the iPhone never require it on Android phones. So given that this is so what are you doing in an Apple forum?

Have an iPhone. Like it. Just want it to tether and not have all of my friends rub their Samsungs in my face.

You need new friends.

The iPone WILL TETHER and doesn't need an app to do it. You just need to enable it with your carrier. And did you see the post from someone who installed an app that allowed tethering, then was back billed by AT&T for the tethering plan? The same is true with a Samsung. Believe it or not, carriers are not incompetent, and will know if you are tethering without a plan.

Some carriers are incompetent. I am not worried about being billed as long as I can actually tether when I want to if my phone has data service.

In other words, you want to steal a service you are not entitled to under your contract with your carrier.

I just want to tether. It's my data and I want to use it my way. If they bill me I will pay. But my carrier doesn't have a tethering plan. If your phone can tether you are free to do so. I can tether with a BB, a Nokia, a Windows phone, a Sony Ericsson, a Samsung, etc. Just can't do it with the iPhone. Apple needs to wake up.

You can tether with an iPhone if your carrier offers that. Your carrier needs to wake up.

The point is every other phone on the market can do it without the carrier doing anything.

On Verizon, for example, the built in personal hotspot feature of the Samsung Galaxy SIII will only work if you have the feature enabled with the carrier and are paying whatever rate applies. If you download one of the apps that lets you get round the carrier, and they catch you, which they very well might, they will either bill you for the services that, based on your agreement with them, you have stolen or they will disconnect your service.

Exactly, with the Samsung I have the choice of installing an app. Many carriers don't have tethering plans but you are free to tether if your phone allows it.
