My wife and I share two computers and one iPad. We each have our own Apple ID, so some music, books, etc are purchased with one id, some with another.

I puchased a book using her Apple id on the ipad, and there it sits.  but when I wanted to download it to one of our two computers, I got a message from iTunes to the effect that this computer had been associated with another Apple id, and if i went ahead with downloading this book, i could not download anything belonging to the other id for 90 days!  What gives?  If we both use this computer, shouldn't purchases made by each of us be available on the computer??

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), 4GB RAM

Using iTunes match, automatic downloads or re-downloading past purchases will potentially tie a computer (or device) to that account for 90 days : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627

If it's on your iPad then you should be able to copy it over to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11).
