how do i make my hdmi connection from my macbook to my tv work? It's plugged in and it shows the background from my laptop to my tv but nothing else, is there a setting i have to fix to make it work?

If you're only seeing the background, you're working in extended desktop mode. In theory, you could drag a window from the Macbook up to the TV screen and then you'd see it.
I suspect, though, that what you want is mirrored mode, where whatever you see on the Macbook is mirrored to the TV. In System Preferences, Displays, Arrangement, click "Mirror displays".
