How can I change administer on user accounts without a password?

I am the sole user of my computer and do have a username and password, but somehow was unselected as an administrator. Without being selected as the administrator, I am unable to make necessary changes. How can I correct this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.
