Correct Phil. On my annual trips abroad that is the way I use my iPhone. I turn off data roaming and use WiFi only. My bills have never been any higher then they normally are that way.

In case of am emergency, I would enable data roaming and pay the charges.

Most hotels has WiFi where I have stayed, Israel, Germany, Greece, Italy and Ireland.

It is my understand that if you get internet connection from local carrier, you will be charged roaming fees from your regular carrier which can be extremely costly. If you wish to use Skype only do it with WiFi to prevent roaming charges.

hallo allan i got this new ipad 4 wifi and cellular from ireland but i havn't signed up for a carrier from ireland as i wish to use wifi in ireland but i will be going to india in a weeks time and where i stay wifi is not available so i intend to buy a micro sim with data plan from india for network courage so in tat case wud roaming charges apply.

I don't think roaming charges would apply on a local sim.

Since the sim will be local, then only the normal data charges from the carrier would apply, but no actual roaming would apply, as well it wouldn't actually be roaming. It would simply be a local sim to where you are.

You still need to find a carrier in india that will support it, and buy a plan form them. You may have luck and find a pay as you go type of plan rather than a full contract.
