How do I get sustain to work in Logic 9?

Hi, I've got a Korg Kontrol 49 Midi keyboard hooked up my MBP via USB for use with Logic 9. However, I work out how to get the pedal to work as sustain, anyone any ideas? Also, can you add sustain to nots in the piano roll? If so, how? Cheers.

Hi

With a switch pedal plugged into the correct socket on the back of the Korg, you may still need to setup the Korg to transmit the correct MIDI (CC64) messages.

Operate the switch and check in the MIDI IN Activity display in the Transport to see what is being sent.

For details on how to setup the Korg, see the manual (section 11)

You can add Sustain on off messages in the Piano Roll, Score or the Arrange using HyperDraw. You can also add them graphically directly into the Score, or manually enter them in the Event List

It could be one of two things.

The pedal is plugged into the wrong input jack on the back, or the keyboard hasn't been powered up with the Pedal plugged in. First thing to do is power down the keyboard, if it has a on/off switch use that, if not unplug the USB cable, wait a few seconds then power the keyboard up. The keyboard will sense the pedal and activate the correct polarity.

However, I think it probably goes in the jack marked switch.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've tried the pedal in both jacks and neither work as sustain. In switch it stop/starts playback.

I've already tried unplugging and plugging back in but this doesn't work. I'm wondering if its because I didn't have the pedal connected the first time I used it with logic and so logic hasn't recognised it? How do I delete the korg keyboard and reinstall it?

Failing that Ill look at the assignment, I need to read up as I've no idea what Cc64 messages are :-/

How do I add sustain in the piano roll etc, I've done a search in logic help and can't find anything? :-/

Hi

I would check the Korg manual to identify what the switch pedal function has been assigned to.

Not likely to be the problem, but you could check Preferences;Control Surfaces:Setup.

I guess it could also have been assigned as a MIDI "keycommand"?? Check Preferences:Keycommands to see if any MIDI messages have been 'learned' for Play/Stop

Please note: Korg uses a different polarity for it's sustain pedals/switches compared to the standard Roland/Yamaha settings... so you will need to go into the global settings on your Korg and set the polarity to the opposite (usually negative) setting to it's default.

Now it should work fine.... with Logic. I use both the Triton and the Oasys and for both I had to change this setting in their Global settings... to get the sustain pedals to work..

Well I've changed the polarity and that didn't help either. To be honest, I can only change settings on the Korg when I don't have logic running, such as polarity, foot pedal assignment, but as soon as I start logic it reverts to other settings determined by logic.

If I go into control surfaces settings and look at the key commands foot switch is set to stop/start by default. I can change this, but can't see a setting for sustain. If I type sustain into the search bar in the key command window it gives me the following options:-

Arrange and Various editors > Sustain pedal to note length

Various Windows > Hyper Draw - Sustain pedal

Step input keyboard > sustain inserted note

Selecting any of these does not seem to do anything. It's starting to drive me mad. Anymore ideas?

I think I'm going to try my Nord keybpard and see if sustain works on this. In the meantime how do I add sustain in piano roll etc?

OK so I've just discovered how to add sustain using hyperdraw, in a fashion. Is there a way to add sustain to individual notes or a group of notes rather than them all?

This is a workaround... the pedal things needs to get straightened out.

Sutain has two qualities, Pedal On = sustain, Pedal Off = No Sustain.

Value can be 127 or 64 Value is always 0 (zero)

Thanks so much for this, bypassing control surfaces works. I guess what I'll have to do is bypass for recording the keyboard, and then switch back for using as a control surface.

Took me a while to find the bypass though as I was looking in preferences at the top of the arrange window, but you have to go into preferences in the top menu bar where it says logic pro next to the apple logo.

Thanks again, I'm now one happy chappy.
