Power save options

I'm new to the Mac line and I have a question regarding the power saving options available.

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini with the fusion drive. It is going to be used primarily as a media server. I currently have it set to never go to sleep. My question is, in this mode does the hard drive ever go into an idle, standby, or sleep mode if not being accessed? And if yes, is it an automatic thing or do I need to manually set this option? If no, will never putting the mini to sleep damage it in any way?
