I'm not great with all this computer stuff, but I'm hoping to hook the Apple TV, 1st gen to my MacBook Pro? Is it possible? When I plug the TV into the computer, nothing happens?

While you can use it to display pictures it is important to understand that AppleTV1 despite having a hard drive is not a storage/backup solution - you need separate photo storage and backup strategy unless you doin't mind losing them.
While you can sync photos to AppleTV you can't sync them back.
