How can I unfreeze my Macbook Air? I have tried restarting but it simply opens on the frozen email page.
I have tried a few multople key combinations. I would be very grateful if someone could post one that might ensure that any applications quit before re-starting.
MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
If the mail is forcing your mac to freeze, kill mail app.
From menu, apple > Force Quit and select Mail app and click on Force Quit button.
This should kill the app. However, you will need to find out why Mail app is causing this.
I can't access the menu as the laptop is completely frozen. It isn't possible to move the cursor to access the menu bar. I am only succeeding in shutting down by depressing the power key.
if you have another user configured on your Mac, try to sign in to your computers that user account.
Try to boot your mac from recovery partition and run disk utility to check permissions and disk.
Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window.
Hi - thanks for this advice. Still no joy. I don't have another user account on the mac. I tried Command and the R key. This sounded hopeful as I got the proper re-start sound (which I wasn't getting by just depressing the power key) but the MacBook Air is still opening up to the frozen screen. Any other suggestions or is it time to visit the Genius bar?
Have you successfully booted to recovery partition and checked your disk from there?
when you boot from recovery partition you should see somethink like this:

then chose Disk utility and perform tests on disks.
Try Force Quit.
Press command + option + esc keyboard keys together at the same time.
Wait.
When Force Quit window appears, select Mail if not already.
Press Force Quit button at the bottom of the window.
Wait.
Mail will quit.
Hi - not sure how I boot to this recovery partition. Power key and/or combination with Command-R only returns me to the same frozen screen.
Are you keeping Cmd and R keys pressed until the apple logo appears?
Alternatively you may try to boot to single user mode
Hi - I've just tried this but no joy. The screen stays firmly frozen with no option to use the cursor etc.
Yup. I've just tried again. After the apple logo etc, the screen is going grey, then the wifi scanning box comes up and then - about 30 secs later it returns to the frozen email. The immovable cursor is flicking on/off and the wifi continues to scan but still the screen remains frozen...ahhh!
And booting to single user mode does not work as well?
Not sure I understand. How do I do this?

I just tried this ... I pushed the power button to turn off; then on and immediately depressed Command-S. The same old frozen screen returns!!
Strange... and if you try to keep this key combination longer?Simply press Cmd and S and keep holding until, hopefully, single user mode appears.
