problem with iphone 3gs, ios 6.0.1

Have you tried connecting it to your computer, as instructed?

Is your phone jailbroken? If it is you have identified the problem. If not, it's always possible the activation servers are down, but that should not be for long.

So from what I can see, if the phone was ever jailbroke or unlocked you may have an issue getting it to work. This is the case with mine. However I thought that if I wiped the phone, and I did and then installed the new iOS it would lock to its original network (Telus). I don't even wnat to use the 'phone' just wanted to set it up as an iPod for my kid.

What carrier were you using before you had it unlocked by AT&T? If it was not AT&T, then your phone had to be hacked so that you could use it previously. That means that it has been damaged by the hack and is no longer able to process even a legitimate unlock.

Correct, if the phone was hacked to replace the baseband with an iPad baseband (a common way to unlock it) there is no way to undo this hack by simply installing the latest version. The install will fail on a baseband mismatch. While there may be ways around this, you can't learn about them in an Apple-hosted forum. I hope this helps.
