Pages will not open my previous Pages document, it says"can only open Docs saved with Pages 09

This sounds like a document created with Pages 08. Do you have Pages 08 still installed on this computer?
What is the file extension of the document?
Did you create it, or did someone email it to you?
Can you write out the exact error you get when you try to open it?
I made these documents on my iPad and always update to the lastest versions of installed software.
I cannot open any doc made before the update and had given up on Pages, but I would like to use it, if possible.
The error states:
"Pages only supports documents saved with iWork '09".
I cannot see what the file extensions is as I cannot open any of the Docs, on my iPad, iPhone, MacBookPro or iMac.

Try updating the Pages application. You mentioned your updated the iOS software, but not Pages. On the iPad, launch the Apps store. There should be an "updates" button at the bottom
To being able to use Pages documents between all devices you need to have Pages 09, also on the Mac computer.
I have paid for the update to Pages on my iMac, but this has not helped
I have also deleted the Pages App and reinstalled it, to no avail.
Some time ago, i went into the mobile docs folder and followed earlier advice re changing the file extension etc and this did not work either, so I cannot go any further, but thank you and Karen for your help and patience.
It sounds like you have two copies of Pages on your computer.
To check, open up your applications folder. Look for a blue folder titled iWork 08. Also look for Pages on it's own.
If you have both of the above, open the iWork 08 folder, and drag the Pages app located there to the trash.
It seems your computer is connecting to Pages 08, not the newer version you paid for from the Apps store.
That should work.
Why trash Pages 08? If the OP has both it is a matter of knowing which to use. I have bot on my computers.
If you have Pages 08 and Pages 09, there really is no need both. Pages 09 does everything (and more) that Pages 08 does, and it even has an option to create a Pages 08 version of a document within the Pages 09 application.........so there is no need to confuse yourself. It is also highly likely, you will never use it for the above reasons.

That's not completely true. The iWork '09 apps can save as '08 but not as '06 or '05 which '08 can. Granted, it's not a common need, but you never know when someone may need the feature.
Don't know if you're still trying to solve this problem so I thought I'd share for you or others...
I was wondering if you tried this yet...
Rename the file from "My important assignment.pages" to "My important assignment.zip" and tell the message you really do want to use .zip.
-- Double-click the file.
-- Open the "My important assignment" folder, and open "QuickLook" folder.
-- Double-click the "Preview.pdf"
-- Copy the text and paste into a new Pages document.
This little tid bit also helps when the pages document corrupts and we receive that friendly "Import Error The file format is invalid." message. These steps help you to recover your page file info.

WE ARE ALSO HAVING THIS ISSUE AFTER RECENT PAGES UPGRADE FROM 4.3 TO 5.0.
CAN'T OPEN MOST OF OUR SAVED DOCUMENTS, BUT CAN OPEN WORD DOCS.?

Sorry!! Not shouting just forgot CAPS was on as I am having to Re-DO a proposal that was saved and now can't open after upgrade last week. So frustrated.
Ok, in which version of Pages was it created and saved? Or was it created in Word? You are not giving much information and I or anyone else can't see you computer screen.
So I am a life long Windows user. My boss has a MAC and I admit it is pretty foriegn to me.
From what I can tell, the documents were saved on Pages 4.3 and now she upgraded to 5.0.
She has a MAC OSX 10.9.
We are able to open documents saved as Word but not the Pages ones.
