Time Machine is Off - Not showing up in Disk Utility - Can't Delete Old Backups

Hi

I want to delete most of the old backups as they are taking up so much disk space. When I click on TM I can see all the old backups. I did some searching on here and opened up Time Machine options; Time Machine is Off and wants me to 'Set up other Time Capsule' (that is not listed here). But nothing is listed there! When I go to Disk Utility to erase Time Machine it isn't showing up; so why do I have and where are the backups?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.7.5)
