iMovie won't let me drag in a video

When I try to drag a video into iMovie it won't let me (it normally does) and when I tried putting the video in iPhoto to access it on iMovie in the "iPhoto Videos" section, it doesn't show up when I open iMovie and look for it. The video's file extension is .AVI
