Q: how do I transfer iTunes and iPhotos from an older iMac to a newer one?

I have a 5-6 year old IMac and would like to transfer my iTunes and iPhotos to my newer (1 year old) iMac, which has the latest downloads. How do I transfer iTunes and iPhotos from an older iMac to a newer one? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

You can use Migration Assistant, located in the Utilities folder under Applications.

Migration Assistant has a bad history with iPhoto Libraries, so I'd avoid that.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:

Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...

But however you do choose to link the two machines...

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.

    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.

This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Thank you. Just prior to receiving your response, I had found a link which allowed me to copy to external drive and then onto my newer computer. It worked. I'll include link @ end of this post.

I found a similar set of instructions for moving iTunes. I'll include that link right below this paragraph. That worked fine until step 14 - am unable to find any iTunes Media Folder. So, back to drawing board on that one.

Thank you again for your response on iPhoto. Much appreciated adn am filing for next time.

    1. locate your original iTunes Media folder, and drag it to the Trash. Important: Don't remove the iTunes Library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Media folder. For more information about the iTunes Library files, see this article.
    2. Quit iTunes and then open iTunes once more.
      • If you receive the alert "The folder containing "iTunes Library" cannot be found, and is required. Please choose or create a new iTunes library," you most likely moved the iTunes Library files. If this is the case, move them out of the Trash and back to where they were.
      • If you can open and close iTunes without encountering the above alert, empty the Trash."

I'm at the old machine's pictures folder and have copied the iphoto library - my passport (external drive) says I don't have enough room for the library (24K pictures) and the new machine is connected.  How do I command it to copy from the old to the new?

It is not required to transfer the photos to your My Passport first, you can also use the other methods that Terence mentioned.
