Can I set a default number for a contact?

When I attempt to send a message to a contact by finding them in their respective groups in my contacts, it automatically selects a phone number. I can, of course, search for the contact and select the correct number. But this is very tedious when I am trying to send a message to a group of 20 people (instead of just selecting the group and selecting each name). Is there a way to set a default number?
