You can only get the music in your iTunes library and sync to the 2G iPod.

You have to transfer the library to iTunes and then sync via iTunes to the 2G.

You would sync the ipod to your computer just as you sync the ipad to your computer.
Oh dear, I only have an extremely old computer I haven't turned on in long time. It's all on iPad 2. Does that mean I have to buy a computer? Or is it easier/cheaper to buy another later model iPod which then will transfer all my music in iPad to iPod via iCloud ? Thanks so much for helping me
The ipad and ipod should both be synced to a computer. They are not really stand alone devices.

If they are not really stand alone devices, yet my music library on my ipad is in iCloud which I can as you say download to a device and I would love to avoid the expense of buying a new computer! do I have any choices. i.e modern ipod or modern iphone bi-passing computer expense? For example I could use a new phone, so if i buy the iPhone 4S - would that download my music from iCloud? Can I play music from phone in my car which has a lead for iPod in it. Does it use up lots of phone battery if I do that? Or is it better to consider buying both new iPod and iPhone due to battery life.

You can download purchases from itunes as long as they still carry them. they may not be available forever.
All of your music and everything esle should be on your computer and backed up with your regular backup copy of your computer.
You can download most itunes purchases on ipad, ipod touch and iphone.
I see no reason to have an ipod and an iphone.
If your ipad/iphone/ipod crash you would have to restore using itunes on your computer.
I would not reccommend using an iphone ipod/ipad without a computer.

Will check out computers, hope they don't cost too much, as I guess it has to be a Mac. Sadly my old PC is so old and does not work well.
Though could a PC give me more flexibility? as it can do Adobe flash player which I miss! And I am only buying due to this music situation!

Macs can run flash, same as a pc.
