Setting Up A 1TB time capsule

I have just purchased an apple time capsule used from ebay. I don't have the software discs or anything so please post a link to a downloadable version[for pc]. I am wondering if I could set it up using a pc and make it a place for backups and a wifi extender for my other network. I don't want it to be a wirelesss repeater because it is going on the otherside of the room so I want to be able to just plug in an ethernet cable. Please tell me what programs I need and exactly how to set it up. Thank You

You can do all those things..

Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet to do the setup..

Open the airport utility you just downloaded.. all setup is done via this utility.

1. Rename the TC, the wireless and the hard disk (if required) to SMB names.. short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. This is mac version utility but the basic headings are the same.

So get rid of that name.. and give it a simple name.. TCGenx whatever you like.. but no spaces.. no special characters.

Do the same on the wireless page and the disk page.

2. Set the TC to bridge mode.

3. Setup the wireless network.

The setup is to create a wireless network.. set the mode but auto should be ok.. set wireless channels if you have issues but auto is probably ok there as well.

But this is my preferred setup.. also hit wireless network options and give a different name to 5ghz.

Make sure the country is correct.. etc.

4. Setup file sharing.

I turn on the guest account.. less security .. easier for windows.

Set the right workgroup.

For backup to a TC you need a software that can use network drives.. home edition windows cannot backup to networks.. although MSBackup is so bad that only people with blood transfusions from Mr Gates will stomach it..

There are many thousands of backup softwares.. get one that works to network drives.. 90% do.

Get ones that are easy to restore from.

I use Macrium Reflect . free for disk images.. you will need to pay to do incrementals.

which port do I plug the Ethernet cable into

Any.. they are all the same.

That is what I wrote.. in bridge it makes no difference.. there is no wan port in bridge.. there in only LAN.. you now have 4 lan ports.. plug it into 1 or 2 or 3 or 4.. they are all LAN ports.

but my wifi is password protected does it matter

Sorry now you have lost me.. you are not wifi extending.. which is impossible.. we already did that.

You create a whole new wireless on the TC.. Please look at all the screen shots I gave you.. you create a new wireless network..

You can give it identical settings to the existing wifi.. or different ones.. roaming doesn't work on PC's anyway so you may as well use completely different setup.. but your wifi password is whatever it is. Use the same on both.. setup exactly as I pictured.. with your names and passwords obviously.

Extend wifi means repeater.. in the first post you said no repeater..

You also said it was for backups.. now it is not for backups???

All I want is to use it too extend my wifi

The method I have given is to use the TC purely as a WAP.. that is what it does.. it creates a wireless network.. you plug the TC in by ethernet.. and you create a wireless network.

Now you can plck whatever you want for the Network name.. I recommend you use a different name.. otherwise on pc system you have no idea what is going on. Mac's can roam properly. If you want to roam with the Mac then setup the wireless for both the main router and the TC with identical names.. identical security setting and password.. but different channels.. as already described. Follow my original post to the letter. deviate neither to the left nor to the right.. use your own names.. and passwords being the only difference.

is there a way I can use it as a place for files and a repeater

Did you as yet try the setup I outlined with much effort with screen images in my first post..

It will allow you to use the TC for files and if placed on an ethernet connection in a different area of the house will provide you a wireless network, that will connect back to the main network.. it is not extend .. it is not repeater.. it is roaming. Or it is two different APs but using the same network. It will work perfectly for you if you set it up exactly as I outlined.

It is the only correct way to do it.. You cannot use the TC as repeater to non-apple wireless devices.. I seem to be repeating myself.. YOU CANNOT.. CANNOT repeat.. wireless signal.. if the signal comes from an NON-APPLE router.

You use roaming network.. please read the apple description because you seem not to believe or understand me.
