Setup Airport Extreme for xBox Live

It seems a lot of people have struggled with this so I thought I would share what has worked for me.

I am using a 5th generation airport extreme and Airport Utility 6.1.

First click on your Airport Extreme in the first display of Airport Utility.

Take note of the LAN IP address (you will need this later).

Airport extreme settings (tab by tab)

Base Station tab

nothing to do here. just the normal stuff

Internet tab

Connect using: DHCP

also take note of your Subnet Mask DNS server addresses ( you will need them later)

Wireless tab

nothing to do here. just the normal stuff

Network Tab

Router mode: DHCP and NAT

Select the Network options button (near the bottom of the page)

Ensure Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol is selected.

Ensure Enable Default host at: is selected. (this is Apple's version of a DMZ).

When you select the Enable Default host it will give you an IP address. Take note of this address you will need it later. It will be the address for your xBox.

Close this didalog box by selecting SAVE.

Go to the Port Settings section on the Network tab.

You need to setup several ports (53,80,88,1863, and 3074) to be forwarded to the xBox IP address.

To do this clidk the + button

To assign port 53 do the following:

Enter a description, e.g. xBOX Live

Public UDP port 53

Public TCP port 53

Private IP address (make sure this matches the address you wrote down when you enabled the default host.

Private UDP port: 53

Private TCP ports: 53

then hit save

repeat these steps for all the ports listed above.

Once all this is done select Update to load these settings to the Airport Extreme.

The Extreme shoudl now be setup.

xBox settings

Now you need to manually configure your netwrok settings on the xBox.

Go to the network configuration screen on your xBox.

Select the IP address section and choose manual.

Select the IP address and enter the IP address your Extreme gave you when enabling default host.

Select the subnet mask and enter the subnet mask of your network (remember this was what you wrote down from the internet tab in Airport Utility)

Select the gateway address and enter the LAN IP address here (ound on the first display screen of Airport Utility by clicking the Airport Extreme picture).

Save these settings.

Then select the DNS address section and select manual.

Enter the primary and secondary DNS addresse you took note of earlier (these are found in the Internet tab of Airport Utility)

Save these settings.

You're done!

Test your xBox connection and good luck.

In your recommended procedure you have the user both configure the AirPort to place the user's Xbox in a DMZ and to forward ports. As you are already aware, when a device is in a DMZ all of the router's ports are already opened to it and port forwarding/mapping would not be necessary. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to have them try port mapping first, and then, use a DMZ as a last resort if the mapping didn't work for them?

I always use this:

How to put your Xbox One in the DMZ w/ an Apple router in Mac OS X:

-On your One:

Settings/Network/Advanced Settings: write down the wired or wireless MAC address on the right(depending on what type of connection you have). It must be EXACT and is case sensitive

Turn off your One

-On your Mac: Go to Finder/Applications/Utilities/Airport utility

Click on the the Airport Extreme or Airport Time capsule icon

Click on edit

Click on Network tab

Make sure router mode is set to "DHCP and NAT"

At the bottom of the empty box that sez "DHCP reservations" click the + sign

A drop down menu will open. Type in Xbox One or whatever(doesn't matter what you use, it's just a title)

Below that it sez "Reserve address by-should be on "MAC address"

Below that where it sez "MAC Address, type the MAC address you wrote down from the Xbox One(remember, it's gotta be EXACT)

Below that where it sez IPv4: type in 10.0.1.253(it might have part of it already there, like 10.0.1.2. Just add the 53)

Click Save

It'll bring you back to the previous menu. Click "Network Options" towards the bottom

Put a check in the little box next to "Enable default host at:" The ip address 10.0.1.253 should appear. If not, type it in.

Click Save

It'll bring you back to the previous screen. Click Update.

It'll take 2-3 minutes for your router to update. if you have older Apple routers, they'll flash amber til it's done, then solid green.

When your router's done updating, make sure your computer(or smartphone) can connect to the internet on your network like usual

-On your One: Turn it back on

Go to Settings/Network/Advanced Settings

Towards the top right it SHOULD say: IP address:10.0.1.253

If it does, your good to go

If it doesn't, you either had a type-o or it's gonna take some time for the One to update on screen

Hope this helps some poor soul!
