i have a macbook pro 2011 with 4GB RAM, 320 GB hard disk, mountain liion installed. for the past 2 weeks, it is taking nearly 10 mts to boot.

It is taking nearly 10 mts for moutain lion to boot. I have used Mactune up utility to check disk status and there are no problems with the disk. Double checked with SMART utility and it reported no issues with the disk. Out of 320GB disk, 220 gb is free space in the disk

Ran anti virus to check for any virus relalted issues and found none. I have also checked programs which are part of login in User and Groups. I found only iTunes helper and unchecked the same. Post this operation, i had shutdown my pc and then re-started and am still experiencing 10 mts window for start up. I am not seeing errors in the macbook pro. can someone advise what needs to be done. do i need to reinstall mountain lion. if yes, can someone advise me how to reinstall mountain lion without erasing disk.

MacTune and whatever AV software you have installed there, are slowing you down big time. I really hope your AV isn't Norton. Which is it, please? Are you a former Windoz user?

thanks for your prompt response. i have installed Virus Barrier (from Mac App store) and Mac Tune up utility.

are you recommending un-installing both the software and then see whether the situation improves.

I had Norton AV on an old Mac, and when I finally uninstalled it, boot up time went from 7+ minutes to 1-2 mins. In addition, what Extensions or other internet apps/plugins do you have one there.

Restart your Mac after the installations. I'm hoping you'll find a large difference.

Thanks Bee, i will uninstall Virus Barrier and see what happens. I have no internet plug ins installed. are you suggesting to uninstall mac tune up as well. i am now at work (based out of india). will go home and try your suggestions and respond back late in the evening. in your last line - "Restart your Mac after the installations", i hope you meant "Un-install" anti virus and mac tune up. Please clarify.

have tried the options mentioned above and re-started my macbook. it is still taking time to reboot, approximately 10 mts. are there any other tips to be tried. please advise.

vijay -- you said that this started two weeks ago. Please tell us what changes or additions you made to your system just prior to two weeks ago?

Check your console messages recorded during the exact startup time. Do you see anything repeating over and over?

To reinstall, just boot into the Recovery HD (Cmd-r on restart), the click Reinstall Mountain Lion. It will not erase your disk, but a backup is recommended, regardless.

I can't tell if you uninstalled Mac Tune Up. Anything purporting to clean up, tune up, or provide any maintenance of you Mac will cause more problems than it can hope to fix. It is possible that it "tuned up" your Mac right into taking 10 minutes to boot. In that case, reinstalling will likely be required.

Another small, unrelated thing I noticed you said.

Unchecking the box in Login Items does not disable the login item. It merely sets it to hide or not when it starts. Most hide anyway. You have to select the item and click the - button to remove an item.

The iTunesHelper wouldn't cause the issue, nor would anything else in your login items as they only start when you login, not when the Mac boots up.

There are no devices hooking up to the Mac. Between the 2 time intervals,there is nothing happening except Mac booting up. Once it boots and I type my password,everything starts in a jiffy. Thereafter there are no issues.

Is reinstalling the os the only solution,if yes,can u pls help in providing step by step instructions

So the original boot up time was 6:43:35, nothing was recorded and

10 minutes later it kicked in with PMAP: PCID enabled ?
