My ipad and iphone sync but not with my laptop

My iphone 5 and ipad 3 sync events in ical fine but events on my laptop are not syncing. What is the problem I just want it to be simple, one calendar that sync's. Does it have to be the icloud home calendar in order to sync across all devices?
