Develop iOS apps with SAP backend without SUP/SYBASE

Is there anyway that i could communicate with SAP database tables from iOS apps without using sybase/SUP servers ,because the licensing cost is huge. I want to communciate with SAP Database from xcode ,any sugg?

and i got this

http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/40530676-117e -2e10-979f-d7892e6a492d?QuickLink=index&overridelayout=true&51337744252857

here they develop in an seperate environment called ODATA dev tool , then they open it using Xcode.

Generally we call data from remote server to Xcode by using API's like PHP,ASP with architecture like REST,SOAP etc sameway i want to know if i could access any API's of SAP like BAPI etc so that i could load the SAP data on my iOS simulator . Guide me!!!!
