importing movies from PC to Mac

I have a MacBook Pro using 10.8.2. I want to use iMovie but have no experience. I want to iomport the movies I created on my Windows PC that I have copied to the Mac. The format is .MOD and .MOI. How do I go about it as nothing I have tried is successful. Imovie does not recognise the files when I try to import.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I would suggest that you use a free tool called MPEG Streamclip, available here. Get the Beta version.

Drag your .mod clip into MPEG Streamclip. The, use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. Save it where you can find it.

In iMovie, import using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE.

If you have a large number of mod clips, MPEG Streamclip has a batch mode.
