My new IPhone 5 won't let me send text messages while I am on the phone. Why?

I purchased my first iPhone on 12/12/12 after being an android user for many years. I have other apple products. My iPhone 5 was replaced at the apple store on 12/22/12 because it kept saying NO SIM. Now my iPhone 5 won't let me send text messages while I am on the phone, I keep getting a Not delivered message. Tis happens sometimes when I am not on the phone, Whether it's a picture or a two letter text. It fails to send. I have had Sprint for the last 12 years not until I got my iPhone did I have these issues. Does anyone know what's going on?

Most likely, its a cell signal issue.

Who is your carrier?

If you're actually sending an iMessage (blue bubble) and you use any U.S. carrier other than AT&T, you will not be able to do that unless you are connected to WiFi as CDMA carriers do not support simultaneous voice and data on the iPhone.

Sorry KiltedTim, but you can be on the phone and send a text on Verizons CDMA without being on wifi.

Yes, but you can not send an iMessage unless you have a data connection, and since the phone call overrides the data connection, you can't do it unless you're on WiFi.

I can send a text while on the phone and my only signal is LTE, not wifi, while driving down the interstate.

I was able to text while talking on my android phone with Sprint, but my iPhone 5 won't let me. My sister also has Sprint but she has the iPhone 4S and has never had this issue. I think it might be a software issue though my software is up to date

SMS and iMessages are 2 radically different things. You can still send SMS messages while on the phone when using Sprint with an iPhone. iMessages (blue send button) require a data connection, which is not available while on a phone call.

Shouldn't SMS automatically work if iMessage isn't available? I checked my settings and both are turned on.

Yes, If your sms is turned on, but remember what i said earlier, if your signal is bad, it will not go through.

It may also take some time before it decides to try sending as SMS. I'm not sure whether a CDMA iPhone will even do so if you're till on a call, since it may just be waiting for the data connection to come to life when you finish the call.

You can forcibly send it as SMS by tapping and holding the waiting outgoing mesage.
