Can I use an Airport Express, 1st. gen., to extend an existing wireless network even though I am not utilizing an Airport Extreme as the main wireless router?

The AirPort Express will "extend" a wireless network.....using wireless only.....IF.....your main router is an Apple AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express.
The Express will not be able to extend a wireless network if your main router is provided by another manufacturer.

Do you know when you do this does it slow your overall network speed down?
There will always be some bandwidth loss on the network when you try to extend using wireless only. Hard to know exactly what that might be, but count on approximately 50%.
