error code 50

I got WD 1TB my passport hard drive for christmas.

It came formatted for windows 8, so earlier i reformatted it for Mac

It works fine for the most part but during the process of trying to move everything from my other ext hard drive to my new one it gets to 45 mins through the process leaving 15 minuites to go but all i get is an error code 50 message.

I press ok and nothing has moved onto it at all because the error prevented it from completion.

I'm completely new to Mac having only had it 2/3 months and never having to do anything like this before now.

Other stuff goes on to the drive from the actual Mac but not the stuff from my other hard drive, and it doesn't tell me what it is that won't work or else i would delete it and prevent it from even trying to be copied over.

All help appreciated

thanks

This should give you some insight on what error code 50 is:

I suggest the you DO NOT USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS! They are for experienced OS savy users.

What I would do is determine what has been copied to the new WD HDD from the old external drive. Then I would copy those individual files that have not been transferred from the old external to the new one individually. I suspect that there is one file that is preventing the completion of the transfer process.

As an aid for this task, you might download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free). It will show you what files you have on each individual HDD.

Let me rephrase my suggestion.

Do not try to transfer everything in one attempt.

Determine what has already been transferred on the new WD HDD.

Then determine what has NOT been transferred on the WD HDD from your old external HDD.

If there are several files still left, transfer them one at a time. (drag & drop)

If there is a file that will not transfer, then that one is the culprit that creates the error.

At that point you can try to determine the reasons why.

Ciao.
