Why can't see iPad when I am in iYunes even when connected by USB?

I am in iTunes and have connected iPad via USB - there is a small iPad icon on top toolbar but when I click it it diappears. There are notes in this forum about viewing the iPad contents on left column of screen but I have no left column visible. Can anyone help?
