Just drag the windows where you want them. Free, and easy.
I think you do not realize the convenience of being able to work with a tiled screen that locks (snaps) in place.
To drag windows manually is a time killer.

I only rarely need more than two windows open. If I need to move something, I just drag, hover as the folder springs open, then continue to my destination.
Take a look at a bank worker: he always has a tiled screen. It is more efficient to work like that than having lots of windows clotting your screen, covering each other in a mess. But I see I am not able to convince you. Nor are you able to convince me.

What does moving files around have to do with working in a bank. I hope my bank isn't paying someone to move files around the computer system.
I hardly ever need to move files around. I'm not sure why I would spend any time at all making it more efficient.

It works for me. The setting is turned off by default. You need to go in to the preferences and turn on window snapping.
I use software called Moom (in the Mac App Store) to automate window arrangement and tiling. You can also create presets for window arrangements. There are other utilities too.
Barney 15-E, I'm a pretty dedicated Mac user and window management is a very weak point of Mac OS. It takes a fair bit of mousing and time to drag multiple windows into an efficient arrangement, especially if you want to return to that arrangement later (why does the Mac make you do this from scratch every time?). The question is quite legitimate, especially if you've seen how other OSs can do it in a snap.
That's my point. I don't move windows around at all. I just drag, hover, repeat as required, and drop. I normally do not need more than one window. Only if I am trying to compare two directories is there any need for mor than one window.
It doesn't make any sense to me to open a bunch of windows, navigate to the right places, and then from one to the other. I just do the drag/navigate all in one step.
How many files do you all rearrange in your file system each day?
I'm not talking about the file system necessarily, and I don't think the original poster is either. For example, in my work I sometimes need to refer to a PDF or an Excel spreadsheet while composing in a Word file while maximizing the screen space of both (let each take up half the screen), or keeping a Finder window open as either a drag source or drop target from another application, or having two application windows arranged for drag and drop between them. Or even just tiilng two Word files side by side while editing. We are talking about inter-application productivity. With Moom I can put one app's window in the top half or left half of the screen and another app's window in the right or bottom half and it's done in an instant.
As much of a Mac fan as I am, it's ironic that the most useful window arrangement commands I find are in the applications of Apple's two nemeses, Microsoft and Adobe (like arranging Photoshop windows to drag layers between them). They do a much better job than Apple at this.
cbs20: I can drag a window to the left or the right half of the screen and even the fourth (1/4) of the screen. I may have played with some settings, but I do not see them there. And the key board settings do not work.
Could you send me screenshot of your settings ?
Bomiboll the key is to turn on advanced at the top left of the program and that opens up a new preferences called action settings. Open action settings.
