buying an att iphone 5 from somewhere besides att store

can anyone explain how that works? i have an att iphone 4, contract is up. if i go to the apple store or somewhere else and buy the iphone 5 locked to att who does all the att business part of it? after i leave the store and come home and plug in my phone to itunes what happens? can anyone provide step by step advice/instructions? i will be using the backup of my iphone 4 on itunes on my macbook pro for the iphone 5 if that helps the explanation. thanks for any help.

If you're in the U.S., you can buy your phone linked to your AT&T account from the online Apple Store or a walk-in Apple Store. In either case, you will be asked to provide your AT&T cellular phone number, and that will be used to automatically link your iPhone to your AT&T account both to determine your iPhone price and to set up once you receive the unit.


Hope this helps. I can tell you I've done this many times (with each new iPhone I've gotten).

dooood. thanks so much for the info, they were having an (unadvertised sale, actually) at radio shack on the iphone 5, and they gave us $154 each for our two iphone 4's. got everything all set up on the new iphone 5's last night...so far so good, knock wood. att was going to give us $135 each, by the way.
