I was told by a friend of mine i cant by a cdprayer cleaner that will work on a vertical cd player is that right . Then i would be better off with a new external player ?
A standard CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes will do the job.
But you should try resetting the SMC:
Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) on Intel-based Macs:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM:
If none of that works (and these vertically installed Superdrives that were originally designed for horizontal use in a MacBook can be fickle) then any USB DVD burner/player will work well, and cost from as little as $40. Just make sure that it is stated to be Mac compatible.

Curious. Do USB CD/ DVD burners able to boot up from OS X disc via USB?
This is why I, usually, recommend FireWire Optical drives as I know, for sure, newer Macs can boot an OS X disc from the optical drive via FW.
Is this no longer the case? Can say a OS X Snow Leopard disc be booted to from either an external USB optical drive or FW optical drive, now?
