Frequently lately Safari has been hanging. I do have a habit of keeping a couple dozen pages open in several windows. At some point Safari just won't load pages. I can get the URLs to work in Chrome. If I restart Safari is will work for a while and then stop working.

Can you reproduce the problem at will, or is it random?
Just seems to happen as time passes. I do reload the same pages that were open after relaunching safari, but the problem takes a while to return. Andover time it isn't the same pages.
I have a variation on this problem. Safari starts off working well, but quickly goes downhill. Especially on my iPad. (All my versions and OS are uptotdate.)
If I open a page - go to a second page - usually cannot get back to the first one. On iPad have to cancel the session and relaunce then it works at first and the cycle repeats as above.
This has only happened after downloading the most recent cersion of Safari.
Select
Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
from the Safari menu bar. If any extensions are installed, disable them and test.
Only appears to happen on iOS 6 on my iPad
On my iMac Safari can be slow somethimes as heavy usage times, but it works. On iPad it does not. Needs to be forced closed and restarted.

Wasn't this way before update !!!
Done that close all active apps and re boot at least once
Done the settings - safari - clear cookies & clear history
Still safari ( crawling pages $ continue to crawl
Wifi is fine ... Other devices on wifi work fine
iPhone safari is a rocket ( touch wood )
Ipad - 2, iOS 6.1 , safari is crawling
