Jan 3, 2013 9:14 PM in response to mcskollieby William Lloyd,I've never, ever heard of this.
External drives die all the time. Like, LOTS. So I would say it's not coincidence, it's just that lots of external enclosures are extremely unreliable.

I see really no way that Aperture could have corrupted a drive. Usually it is the other way around - if a drive is no longer working well, or has the wrong formatting, or is connected by an unstable network it may corrupt your Aperture library.
eventually froze so i went through app cleaner and was going to re-install, when it took out my entire external HD..
However, what may make your mounted devices vanish or cause problems with your System and Applications are all kind of "cleaning" apps. Cleaners and general-purpose uninstallers tend to remove files and clean caches that are essential for the performance. Cleaning caches will slow your mac down, until the caches have been rebuilt. Cleaning the System Cache will even prevent Aperture from playing or importing videos. Removing packages may stop other apps from working. I suspect your cleaning may have caused this trouble, see:
To uninstall it is safer to use the uninstallers provided by the manufacturer, see this:
