New iTunes (iPod, iPad etc) what do bars in device box mean?

Just curious really. See the bars below the 64GB. What do they represent?

Interestingly the iPad is about 55% full in reality, and the iPod is about 40% full (memory wise). The iPad battery was at 5% and the iPod was around 90%. So that eliminates those two thoughts.
