Depends
What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? Do you have iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - ? Do you have Aperture 3.3 or later?
we only know what you tell us - details are critical to being able to answer

i photo 11 v9.3 OS 10.6 - yes I have I photo Lib Manager. Dont have or use aperature - but considering it for the " consolidate" function which i read may be the solution to this...
with iplm if you have the photos available at their original path and check the "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" preference and rebuild the library it will convert to a managed library Aperture also can do the job - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5260?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Sorry - The copy imported items to the iPhoto library is an iPhoto preferene - set it in iPhoto and then use iplm to rebuild the library
