volume button making sound when pressed

When I press my volume buttons, a loud popping/clicking noise happens with each press. It shows the volume adjusting on my screen, but I can't get this cracking noise to stop. Help?

Well that seemed to fix it! I just think it's odd it hasn't done that in 3 years and then suddenly it started making that noise! It wasn't the normal volume change popping sound that tells you the level of the volume, it just sounded loud the whole time. Well, anyway, this fixed it so thank you!
